A new squad structure was introduced in September 2006
This is based on how close swimmers are to achieving their national or regional qualifying times, and is closely tied with the swimmer's commitment levels. Reaching the required percentage of national qualifying time is no guarantee that the swimmer will progress into the next squad. Effort levels and attitude in training, potential and coaches discretion are also considerations in this.
